Alphametic Puzzles: Generation Options Explained

Where do you find the generation options?

Open your alphametic project and switch to the 2. Generate area. There you can access the "Generate options" dialog – this is where you define which equation types Puzzle-Generator searches for and which words qualify for the search.

A quick reminder: in an alphametic puzzle, every letter stands for a digit – the most famous example is SEND + MORE = MONEY. Puzzle-Generator does the hardest work for you: it automatically tries countless combinations from your word list and finds exactly those equations that work out mathematically and have a unique solution. Where to find the generate options dialog

Equations with two operands: addition, subtraction, multiplication

In the first section of the dialog, you use checkboxes to select which equation types with two operands – that is, two words on the left-hand side – are included in the search:

Y = A + B – the classic

Adding two words is the best-known alphametic form (as in SEND + MORE = MONEY) and usually delivers the most hits. If you're creating an alphametic puzzle for the first time, this is the ideal starting point.
Recommendation: Leave it enabled almost always – the foundation of every productive search.

Y = A − B – the subtraction

In a subtraction, one word is subtracted from another. This feels less familiar to solvers than addition and brings welcome variety to puzzle series. The number of hits is usually in a similar range as with addition.
Recommendation: Enable it when you want variety – especially nice in mixed worksheets.

Y = A × B – the supreme discipline

Multiplying two words is the most demanding variant: it yields significantly fewer hits than addition and subtraction, and the resulting puzzles are usually considerably harder to solve. That's exactly what makes them so appealing to puzzle experts.
Recommendation: Disable it for beginner puzzles. For math fans, competitions, or as a "bonus challenge" on a worksheet, it's a highlight.

Equations with three operands: more words, more brain-teasing fun

In the second section you unlock equation types with three operands – here, three words appear on the left-hand side of the equation. Four combinations are possible:

  • Y = A + B + C: Triple addition – the most productive three-operand type with the most hits.
  • Y = A + B − C: Addition followed by subtraction – an appealing mix that makes solvers rethink.
  • Y = A − B + C: Subtraction followed by addition – same ingredients, different thinking pattern.
  • Y = A − B − C: Double subtraction – the rarest and often most surprising variant.

What makes three-operand equations special

With three operands, more words fit into a single equation – ideal if you want to include, say, three family names or three terms from one topic in a single puzzle. At the same time, the number of letters involved increases, which tends to make the puzzles trickier. A practical background fact: since every letter stands for its own digit, an equation may contain at most ten different letters – with three operands, this limit is reached sooner, which is why shorter words work particularly well here.

Good to know: If you accidentally disable all equation types, Puzzle-Generator automatically re-enables the two-operand addition as a safe default – so a generation run "into the void" is impossible.

Sorting words: avoiding duplicates and repeated operands

Two checkboxes keep your equations clean and varied:

Avoid duplicate words

Ensures that identical words from your list are only considered once. Especially with imported or copied-together word lists, duplicates sneak in quickly and would lead to repetitive, boring results.
Recommendation: Keep it enabled.

Use each word for only one operand

This option prevents the same word from appearing multiple times within a single equation – constructions like ANNA + ANNA = Y. Such equations are mathematically valid but look inelegant and are often easier to see through. With this option enabled, only equations made up of entirely different words are formed.
Recommendation: Enable it for maximum variety. Disabling can pay off when your word list is very small and you want to see every possible equation – repeated operands increase the hit count.

Letters and characters: case sensitivity, umlauts and special characters

Alphametics are all about letters – so how the generator handles spelling and special characters matters a lot. Three options are available:

Ignore case sensitivity

With this option, the generator treats words independently of their capitalization – "Anna" and "ANNA" count as the same set of letters. This is almost always what you want, since the finished puzzle displays all words uniformly in capital letters anyway.
Recommendation: Keep it enabled, unless you deliberately work with a list where upper and lower case distinguish different words.

Replace umlauts and special characters (ä = ae, ß = ss, ...)

Automatically converts umlauts and accented characters into their replacement spelling – "BÄR" becomes BAER, "café" becomes CAFE. All your words stay in the game, and the puzzle gets by with the basic alphabet. Note: the replacement makes the word longer and may add more distinct letters – which can influence which equations are solvable.
Recommendation: The best choice for word lists containing accented characters.

Remove words with umlauts or special characters

The strict alternative: words containing umlauts, ß, or accents are discarded completely. Useful when replacement spellings would be distracting in the puzzle or the target alphabet is strictly limited to A–Z. The two umlaut options are mutually exclusive – you can only ever enable one of them.
Recommendation: Only use it when replacement spellings are explicitly unwanted.

Word restrictions: minimum and maximum word length

With "Minimum word length" and "Maximum word length" you filter which words from your list are admitted to the equation search at all. Words that are too short or too long are removed automatically before generation.

Word length controls the difficulty level

In alphametics, word length has a special mathematical meaning: every distinct letter in an equation needs its own digit from 0 to 9. An equation can therefore contain at most ten different letters. This leads to clear rules of thumb:

  • Short words (3–5 letters): Few distinct letters, many solvable combinations, easier puzzles – perfect for beginners and school.
  • Medium words (5–8 letters): The sweet spot between hit count and challenge – this is where the classic, elegant alphametic puzzles emerge.
  • Long words (9+ letters): Quickly at the ten-letter limit; there are far fewer hits, but the resulting puzzles are impressive and hard.

Hands-on tip: If the generator finds too few equations, first lower the minimum word length or add short words to your list – that opens up new possibilities for the search fastest.

Maximum number of words for generation

The "Max. number of words" field limits how many words from your list are included in the equation search (at least three – that's what the smallest equation needs).

The background: the number of possible word combinations grows rapidly with the list size. With a large imported word list, a limit can speed up the search considerably – the generator then focuses on the words at the top of your list.

Recommendation: For small, hand-curated lists (up to about 50 words), leave the value generous. For large lists, reduce it step by step if generation takes too long – or trim the list beforehand to the terms you really want, so your most personal words are guaranteed to be considered.
