Using the older Puzzle Generator (version 1.x), you can create a unique Advent calendar in the form of a crossword puzzle. Instead of chocolate, each day reveals a new riddle with a personal touch — creative, fun, and completely calorie-free.

The Advent calendar becomes especially charming when the questions refer to things that only the recipient would immediately recognize. What is Grandma’s dog called? Who plays Santa on Christmas Eve? Where do you buy your Christmas tree every year?
Shared memories, inside jokes, and funny Christmas anecdotes can easily be turned into personal crossword clues.
How the crossword Advent calendar works
Collect 24 words and think of a solution phrase that will appear when the crossword puzzle is solved. With just a few clicks you can generate the puzzle in Puzzle Generator.
To make the Advent calendar idea work properly, the clues should not be shown directly in the crossword grid. Instead, the grid should display only the numbers 1–24. To do this, enable the option “Show numbers instead of questions” in Puzzle Generator.
Preparing the puzzle in Word
If you would like to adjust the layout before printing, exporting the puzzle to Microsoft Word is a convenient option. There you can add extra text, hints, or decorative elements.
For the Advent calendar example, the document orientation was changed to landscape format and the spacing between the numbers and the clues was increased significantly.
This way, when the printed strips are folded, only the number is visible at first — the clue appears only after opening the strip.

How difficult the questions should be is entirely up to you. Whether the answers are obvious or require a bit of thinking, the puzzle remains exciting right up to December 24.
You can also include a small note with the complete solution — but of course that’s optional.

Printing the crossword puzzle on colored paper instantly makes it more festive. With red and green paper, star stickers, or small decorations, you can quickly create a beautiful Christmas-themed Advent calendar.
With just a little crafting material, the puzzle becomes a thoughtful and personal gift for family, friends, or a partner.
Ideas for the solution phrase
When the crossword puzzle is completed, a hidden solution phrase can appear. Here are some example ideas:
